Language Policy Our school uses English as the medium of instruction in all subjects except Chinese Language, Chinese History, Putonghua, Religious Studies and Life Education. Apart from that, we also emphasize the teaching of Chinese Language and Putonghua. Through the NET scheme, English Centre, Chinese and English Reading Across the Curriculum Literacy Programme, Drama curriculum, English Week, Putonghua Week and overseas study tours, we hope that our students can achieve the aim of "biliteracy and trilingualism".
Learning and Teaching Strategies Our school offers a balanced and broad curriculum with diverse opportunities for whole-person development of the students. 17 subjects covering nine Key Learning Areas are offered in S1 – S3. 13 electives are offered to S4 to S6 students to broaden their horizons and cater for their diversified interests. Each subject department determines the focused higher-order thinking skills to be taught in class and design learning activities to facilitate students' active learning. As English is our main medium of instruction, we find it important to create an English-rich environment on campus to facilitate students' learning in English. Various strategies have been adopted to enhance the English-rich environment, for example, having native-speaking teachers, setting up an English Centre, the Tesseract and incorporating English drama and English Literature lessons into the school curriculum, organizing the Reading Across the Curriculum Literacy programme and Extended Learning Activities etc.
School-based curriculum 1. Electives: 3X. According to their interests and abilities, each senior secondary student chooses three elective subjects out of the thirteen subjects. Core subjects like English, Chinese and Mathematics are taught in small groups of about 25 students to enhance the learning effectiveness.
2. Curriculum highlights: The S1 – S3 school-based English Drama and English Literature curriculum not only increases students’ confidence in English speaking, their creativity and art appreciation ability are also enhanced. To enrich students’ learning experience and align with drama learning offered by the English and Chinese Language Departments, a creative cross-curricular school-based Aesthetic Development Programme, covering Visual Arts, Music, Drama and Film Appreciation has been offered to senior secondary students.
Approach to Catering for Learner Diversity There is split class arrangement of core subjects Chinese, English and Mathematics to cater for needs of different students. Teaching materials are tailored & different teaching approaches are adopted to suit students’ different learning styles and to develop their abilities. Enrichment programs and remedial classes have been offered for higher-ability and weaker-ability students to develop their potentials and enhance their capacity. The Academic Affairs Section coordinated all the courses for the Gifted and Talented.

Home-School Co-operation Communication channels between parents and school are diversified and appropriate: "Parents' Day" of all levels is held throughout the year to make close contact with parents on students' performance and major school development. Parents are invited to attend major school functions such as Speech Day, Prize Presentation Day & S.1 Association Inauguration, Sports Day, Swimming Gala, etc. Parents show their support to the development of the school by serving as volunteers. The Parents Teacher Association (PTA) helps to strengthen the link between parents and the school. Every year the Christmas offering to charity organizations and Annual Fun Fair are launched by the PTA. The funds raised are used to support the charity organizations, evangelical bodies and the needy students in the school. Various PTA talks are held by social workers to strengthen parents' practical parenting skills and widen their perspectives when witnessing misbehaviors of their children, which might trigger misunderstanding and conflicting situations. Handicraft workshops, culinary workshops, father-child camps, used book sales and etc. are also organized.
School Ethos Towards the end of the Qing Dynasty, a young North American female missionary travelled a far distance to Guangzhou with the religious mission to spread Christianity to China. In order to provide Chinese women with education opportunities, she founded the first True Light School in 1872. It was one of the first colleges for women in South China, and Guangzhou. This female missionary is our school founder, Miss Harriet Noyes (1844-1924). Her religious zeal laid the foundations for the school's future development in education. In pursuit of the ideal cherished by our school founder, our school provides a quality Christian education, aiming at inculcating our students with the values embodied in the Bible and preparing them as a generation knowing how to love themselves and others, to distinguish between right and wrong, and to live in integrity and with a good sense of responsibility. Under a harmonious and friendly school culture, our class teachers, subject teachers and club advisors serve as guides of our students on their path of growth. Guidance and counselling programmes are conducted to help students positively face the challenges ahead and move forward to lead a fruitful life.
School Development Plan 2021-24 School Development Plan
1. IN: Inquisitive, Initiative, Innovative
In the learning and teaching process, give students autonomy in exploration and opportunities to construct knowledge and get creative, cultivate students to become learners with an inquisitive mind, initiative and innovation.
2. SET: Synergy, Empathy, Tenacity
Encourage students to empathize with the needs of the community and collaborate side by side with their peers from idea, planning, action to review and adjustment, which lets students experience experimentation, frustration and success in teamwork to build up their tenacious willpower.
Teacher Professional Training and Development Teachers' Professional Development Section provides teachers with resources for further studies and training and assists them in pursuing their professional development. The section also organizes related professional development activities based on the needs and new trends in their professional development. The section continues to organize class observation activities, encourages the practice of opening the classroom for exchanging ideas, with the hope that colleagues can have more exchange in their teaching experience.
Life-wide Learning In order to provide our students with a wide variety of educational opportunities, a variety of disciplines engage in field studies that make use of the resources that are available in the surrounding area. Students in the junior form, investigate issues such as the preservation of cultural and historical heritage, environmental challenges, and the many uses of urban area, etc. Students at higher levels of education study topics such as geological parks and sustainable cities. In order to broaden the horizons of our students, our school hosts immersion programs and study tours during the summer break. These programs include study and service tours to places like Mainland China and Singapore, as well as study tours to places like Britain, Canada, and Australia, among other places. Aside from that, our school offers over sixty extra-curricular activities for students to participate in, through which they are able to exhibit their passions and skills while also taking pleasure in the pursuits of their own personal interests.
