Language Policy 1. "Biliterate Trilingualism" is advocated by adopting Chinese as the major medium of instruction with emphases on English and Putonghua.<br>2. Adopting a program of ‘Extended Learning Activities in English’. English Learning is added in all non-language subjects at junior levels which enriches student exposure to learning English and enhances student motivation. <br>3. The English Environment Enrichment Program is in place. English Focus Day is held every Wednesday to encourage reading and speaking in English, to provide fun English activities and overseas visits to La Salle Schools of Singapore, Philippines and Australia for authentic English environment, etc. School-based curriculum reform is being conducted. Teachers have developed school-based teaching materials to cater for learner diversity and enhance learning effectiveness. <br>4. Making use of supplementary resources from, e.g. Project WeCan; Newly-arrived Children Grant; School-based Learning and Support Grant, and Language Fund. The provision of supplementary English learning and after-school classes for different levels especially for junior levels with a focus on catering for learner diversity and enhancing English learning support.
Learning and Teaching Strategies 1. As English is one of the major concerns of the school, school-based English curriculum for junior levels, co-curricular activities for English enhancement and after-school English learning support scheme have been implemented. <br>2. Pedagogy of interactive lessons and IT in education (e.g., using iPad, smart board and VLE online learning platform) have been developed to enhance learning effectiveness.<br>3. Nurturing student effective learning habits through lesson preparation, regular revision, note-taking and on-time homework submission.<br>4. Mid-term assessment with diverse modes is conducted to encourage learner feedback thus enhancing the effectiveness of learning and teaching.<br>5. A variety of elective subjects offered in senior forms to achieve the goal of "Art in Science and Science in Art".<br>6. Implementing brain-based learning and teaching strategies in the classroom can effectively enhance teaching effectiveness.
School-based curriculum 1. Electives: 2X and 3X. Based on student interest and competence, more than 20 combinations of electives can be chosen by senior students to fit for their needs.<br> 2. Curriculum highlights: In junior school, according to student aptitude and needs, school-based curricula have been developed including cross-curricular school-based STEAM curriculum. Extended Learning Activities in English are conducted in non-language subjects to develop student English capacity. School-based curricula are also continuously being developed in senior forms.
Approach to Catering for Learner Diversity 1. Streaming of classes or co-teaching is used for core subjects at certain levels, including English, Chinese and Mathematics. 2. Assisted by the School-based Support Services of EDB, support programs have been provided for English Language to upgrade curriculum design and effectiveness in teaching and tackling student learning diversity. 3. Support for newly-arrived children from the mainland: English and social adaptation programs are provided to facilitate student integration into Hong Kong society. 4. Widening the horizons of students through study tours.
Approach to Integrated Education The Inclusive Education Team leads to plan, implement, review, and evaluate the measures catering for students with special education needs (SEN). The team members include the SEN Coordinator, student counsellor, counselling psychologist, support teachers, social workers and teaching assistants. The<br>school adopts a 3-tier model and provides students with appropriate and diversified supporting services to increase and enhance their motivation and confidence. The measures include: small group learning, use of information technology, counselling on speech therapy, social skills and life planning for students, and implementing the "Good Companion" scheme to encourage students with social difficulties to enhance their ability to express themselves and solve problems. Assemblies are arranged to let students know about people with different difficulties or needs in society. Extra-curricular activities, such as barista training programme, micro-film production, drone control, and board games are organized to cultivate students' ability to be more effective, self-confident, communicative, and expressive. For students with great learning difficulties, "Individual Education Plan" are formulated and regularly reviewed jointly with students, parents, class teachers and the educational psychologist.
Education Support for Non-Chinese Speaking (NCS) Students
Home-School Co-operation 1. To strengthen communication between parents and the school through messages sent directly via a mobile phone app, regular School Newsletter, Parent-Teacher Association Newsletter, and direct phone communication and talks during Parent Days with Class Teachers.<br>2. A variety of activities are held by the Parent-Teacher Association such as handicraft workshops, cooking workshops, Cooking workshops, outings and parenting talks.
School Ethos 1. We provide a caring education by touching student's hearts and promoting mutual care among students on the basis of Catholic beliefs and the vision of St. John Baptist de La Salle.<br>2. Simplicity and serious discipline are the school's ethos. A dual Class Teacher system has been adopted to strengthen individual care for students and communication with parents.<br>3. An award scheme has been established to show appreciation for student good behaviour and to raise their self-confidence.<br>4. Various activities are held to enhance student responsibility, self-image and self-expectation.
School Development Plan 1. Enhancing student English standard is one of the school's major concerns. A school-based curriculum, extra-curricular activities, after-school enhancement classes and IT in education have been implemented to improve student English language.<br>2. The library has been expanded and redesigned to become a multi-purpose space incorporating a computerized library, an English activity corner, a self-study resource room, and a mini-performance area. It aims to facilitate a wide range of learning activities both inside and outside the classroom, providing students with an enhanced learning environment.<br>3. The Multi-media Learning Centre has been converted to “MakerSpace” (STEAM Learning Centre).<br>4. More classrooms and improvement of school facilities are made for further class expansion.<br>5. Establishment of the school chapel, increase of classrooms, expansion of the indoor space for activities and improvement of greenery.
Teacher Professional Training and Development 1. A series of training workshops in five years based on Brain-based Learning theory is provided for teachers to develop a Brain-based Learning Professional Community.<br>2. The organization, support and coordination of teacher continuing professional development activities and training.<br>3. The promotion of school-based class observation activities to develop a professional learning community.<br>4. A mentoring system has been set up to offer professional support to new teachers.
