Language Policy Our school stresses importance of the language ability of students and puts a lot of resources in the development of their biliterate and trilingual talents. Our policy is to help students to become strong in English and excel in Chinese. Building on the strength of our students' excellent performance in extensive reading, Chinese Language and Chinese Literature, we have developed a school based Chinese Literature course in our junior form curriculum. This helps to enrich our junior form students' knowledge of Chinese literature, arouse their interest in learning Chinese and raise their Chinese standard. As for English learning, in addition to the Native English Teacher, we have two more NETs from Chatteris and a part time NET. In total, there are four NETs in our school helping organize English activities. Large scale whole school English activities are provided for students in each week and junior form students enjoy two English drama lessons per week this year.
Learning and Teaching Strategies It is our mission to provide quality whole person education which has its roots firmly grounded in Christian values. Through multifarious class building activities, we foster positive values to help students’ in their personal, spiritual and social development. We focus on helping them develop a sense of responsibility and a serving spirit.<br>Our school encourages students to learn through reading, which in turn strengthens their language foundation. We have a gifted education program which helps our best students to develop their potential, and set up after-school tutorial lessons to improve the academic performance of weaker students.
School-based curriculum 1. Electives: 2X and 3X. Subjects included: Business, Accounting & Financial Studies, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Chinese History, Visual Arts, Tourism & Hospitality Studies, Information & Communication Technology, Economics, Geography, Ethics and Religious Studies. Some of these subjects adopt English as medium of instruction by groups. Applied Learning courses are offered.<br> 2. Curriculum highlights: A Life and Society curriculum is provided for junior forms. For S.3 students, they are exposed to Chinese literature selected by our own teachers so as to develop their interest and language ability. Students’ critical thinking skills and Chinese communication skills are trained to cater for the requirements of Chinese and Citizenship & Social Development in the NSS curriculum.
Approach to Catering for Learner Diversity To cater for learner diversity, our school fulfills the EDB requirement and have 39 teachers received training on catering for students with special educational needs (SEN). Together with the extra support of special guidance staff, art therapist, educational psychologist, speech therapist and social worker, we provide full support to students in need. The Guidance Department, SEN Support Department, the School Affairs Department and different academic panels work together to provide ample learning support and assist students in their personal growth. Couselling services, after-school homework guidance classes and special examination arrangements are also provided for students in need.
Approach to Integrated Education In order to foster social integration and cultivate a caring culture, our school adopts a "Whole School Approach" to cater for students with special learning needs. Aiming at enhancing students' learning efficiency and facilitating their integration into the school life, we develop diversified supporting programs by utilizing different resources, for example, the Learning Support Grant and cooperation with tertiary institutions.<br>Our Department of SEN Support consists of a SEN coordinator, an educational psychologist, an art therapist, social workers, student counsellors and teachers. The team cooperates with other departments to provide holistic student support.<br>Our school also works with different non-governmental organisations. We support our students through curriculum adaptation, career planning programs, and various therapy and service groups.
Education Support for Non-Chinese Speaking (NCS) Students
Home-School Co-operation The establishment of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) is to encourage communication and cooperation between parents and the school. All the parents in our school are members of the PTA. We have held various activities such as seminars and sharing sessions. Remarkable activities such as sharing sessions by famous guest speakers (e.g. Barbara Chan, Blanche Tang), day trips, volunteering services and tea ceremony classes for parents have been organized. Parents are eager to put effort to the growth of their children under a close and positive school-parents partnership.
School Ethos With the implementation of rigorous school rules and a student-centered, humanistic approach, our students are well-behaved, self-disciplined, modest and polite with a lot of praise from the community. Our school teachers are professionals who care for the students and enjoy a harmonious relationship with the students. We focus on the combination of discipline and counseling measures to help students grow healthily with a clear award and penalty system. Our school provides a disciplined, yet caring and harmonious learning environment for our students. We facilitate students’ adaptation to school life through various programs and policies, including duo-class teachers system for all classes, homework counselling tutorials, lunch in school for juniors, and a Big Brother and Sister Scheme.
School Development Plan We put emphasis on students’ learning ability and attitudes based on Christian principles and the school motto ‘Wholeness and Holiness’, cultivating positive values and self-esteem to become good citizens in the society and creative pioneers.<br>Our school has focused on enhancing students’ English abilities in a positive learning environment through various activities in the recent years. All our English teachers specialize in English and are subject-trained. Small-class teaching with appropriate groups is implemented in all forms with a school-based curriculum to cater for students’ needs. In addition, we provide English Bridging Courses, English camps, and comprehensive English activities to enable students learn in an authentic context, which enhance students’ English abilities and their university entrance rate tremendously.
Teacher Professional Training and Development Our school gives full support to teachers to develop professionally through continuous studies and sharing and our teachers are outstanding in terms of professional achievements and attitude. Seven teachers were awarded the ‘Outstanding Student Award’ in the School Leadership course for Middle Managers organized by the Department of Education Studies, Hong Kong Baptist University for four consecutive years.
Life-wide Learning Our school emphasizes on the whole person development of students in moral, intellectual, physical, social, aesthetic and spiritual aspects. We have more than 40 groups, teams and organizations that offer a great variety and choices in extra-curricular activities. As a Christian school, religious activities are of integral importance. Our students also do remarkably well in sports. With the new focus on Other Learning Experience in NSS curriculum, our school has implemented a 'Learn to Serve' program in all forms, which allows the students to participate in different service teams and strengthen their serving spirit.
