Language Policy The biliterate and trilingual environment provided by the school gives Sun Kei students an advantage of a firm and diverse language basis. The school adopts English as the medium of instruction for all subjects except the Chinese-related subjects, Chinese History, Visual Arts and Religious Education. For S.1 and S.2, Chinese Language lessons are taught in Putonghua. Our English teachers communicate with students in English every day. Tuesdays and Fridays are school-wide English-speaking Days, while Thursdays are Putonghua-speaking Days. We strive to create a language-rich environment to nurture students. The Language Across the Curriculum (LAC) program advocates the collaboration between Junior Forms of the English Department and other subject departments in areas ranging from enhancing cross-curriculum design, to collaborative teaching and exploration of pedagogy. These measures constitute the coupling with learning in senior forms. The Education Bureau invited Sun Kei to participate in the “Professional Development Schools (PDS) Scheme” to share our Chinese and English teaching strategies and experiences with other schools. Furthermore, two Native-speaking English Teachers (NET) have been recruited to enhance the English aura of the school.
Learning and Teaching Strategies Teachers' professionalism is continually elevated through structured training, collaborative teaching and lesson observations as a Professional Learning Community. Evidence-based strategies are implemented to promote deep learning and to nurture self-motivated learners. The higher-order thinking ability and the academic virtues of students are enriched by means of the multi-dimensional curriculum that embraces STEAM Project Research. Besides, we intentionally provide them with a biliterate and trilingual environment, a wide variety of reading and academic programs, e-learning systems, BYOD strategies and tailor-made learning schemes for the elites.
School-based curriculum 1. Electives: 2X and 3X. Our flexible senior secondary curriculum allows S4 students to choose three electives out of ten subjects. For Mathematics, Extended Module is provided. In addition, Applied Learning courses (mode 1) are offered in S5 and S6. Students are allocated to different electives according to their ability and interest in those subjects.<br> 2. Curriculum highlights: Our school offers a balanced and broad junior form curriculum to cater for students' holistic development. Junior form students will study the subject “English Literature” to extend their English learning. For Chinese Language learning, our teachers employ the “ShareStart” strategies to boost the effectiveness of teaching and learning. Apart from the above subjects, school-based STEAM Project Learning is offered in junior forms, which is themed with STEAM elements. Artificial Intelligence is also covered in junior form Information and Communication Technology lessons, in which students can apply their STEAM knowledge as well as their innovative ideas. Moreover, we widely adopt eLearning strategies in all subjects and aim at establishing a “21st century classroom” (SK Suite) model in our school.
Approach to Catering for Learner Diversity We offer a number of training programs in pull-out operation mode for the academically gifted students in Chinese (Talented Class), English (English Society, Toastmasters Club, English Debate Team), Mathematics and Physics (Olympiad Teams), Integrated Science (Sun Kei Science Kids), Music, P.E. and Visual Arts. After school tutorial groups are conducted in different form levels for English and Mathematics studies and for S.6 students with different abilities to prepare for the public examination. During summer vacations, English and Mathematics enrichment and remedial courses as well as S.1 English bridging programmes are conducted for designated students. Through small-class teaching in S.1 English Language and all senior forms, learner diversity is catered for in everyday lessons.
Approach to Integrated Education Our school applies a whole-school approach to integrate education and has implemented different measures to support students with SEN. Our supporting team includes different important stakeholders in our school, including the principal, vice principals, SEN coordinators, teacher members of our discipline and counselling sections, social workers, educational psychologists, and supporting staff. We provide a wide range of measures for students in need.
Education Support for Non-Chinese Speaking (NCS) Students
Home-School Co-operation Being good partners, Sun Kei and the PTA are collaborating with each other closely. In order to strengthen parenting skills and to facilitate home-school co-operation and communication, various schemes like “Parents’ Academy”, “Seed Parents’ Programme”, “S.1 ‘A Good Start - A Healthy Life’ Programme” and other home-school activities will be held for parents.
School Ethos Based on the Christian culture, Sun Kei puts emphasis on nurturing students' character and morality to foster their development with love and care and to build up the school ethos of conscientiousness, simplicity and purity. The new academic year focuses on inspiring students with a sense of responsibility towards school, society and our nation. Moral education is promoted through lessons, morning assemblies, weekly assemblies and Sun Kei Forum. The ‘My Pledge to Act Day - Strive ahead with Support, Renovate with Grace’ will be held in September. Students, teachers, and alumni will be committed to encouraging and supporting each other. Inspired by Sunkeians’ spirit, we will carry on past traditions, open up possibilities for the future, and contribute to the community with gratefulness. In order to consolidate students' respect and love for the country and strengthen the awareness of national security, the activities of ‘National Security’, ‘National Education’, ‘Ethical Value’ and ‘Citizen Responsibility’ are taken as the target directions throughout the year to deepen students' values of ‘law-abidingness’, ‘respect’, ‘compassion’, ‘commitment’, and ‘integrity’. This year, the school will strengthen the teaching of positive values and promote positive affective development in order to help students face diverse environmental changes.
School Development Plan Based on a three-year school development cycle, the major concerns of the school for 2021-2024 are ‘to promote deep learning and to nurture self-motivated learners’ and ‘to empower our students with a positive and compassionate mindset; to inspire students with a sense of respect and responsibility towards society, our nation and the world.’ Through small-class teaching, additional employment of Native-speaking English Teachers, diversified academic activities, rich language learning environment, promotion of life planning, STEAM learning and citizenship programmes, the school will continue to be student-centred and groom students with sound and solid language ability for becoming 21st century learners. On the other hand, the school fosters students' positive life values and self-image, develops character traits and qualities, broadens their horizons and cultivates positive values and competencies.
Teacher Professional Training and Development Sun Kei brings in the ‘flipped classroom’ and ‘engagement, thinking, production’ strategies to dovetail with the implementation of the ‘Bring Your Own Device’ (BYOD) policy. 1:1 Technology is used with a view to making classroom teaching and learning more effective in response to the paradigm shift in e-Learning. In tandem, Sun Kei implements Thursday Professional Learning Community Session, Friday Staff Development Session, Quest for Excellence@Sun Kei -- Teachers’ Self-mentoring Programme, Establishing Education Professional Networks, Teachers’ Mentorship Programme, Subscription to ASCD Education Information, etc, to strengthen the professionalism of teachers, master the pulse of education and enhance creativity and innovation. Apart from this, the school encourages teachers to use the resources available on EDB websites, such as gifted education and Basic Laws foundation programme. The school also promotes self-directed and life-long learning for teachers to keep abreast of the times. Online exchange was conducted with our sister schools for teachers to broaden their education experience and horizons.
Life-wide Learning Sun Kei provides life-wide learning opportunities to help students gain essential learning experiences and enrich their learning journey. We offer more than 80 clubs of five categories (music and aesthetics, physical, academic, services and other interests) for students, for instance, Symphony Orchestra, Science Research Team, Coding Team, etc. In addition, there are 14 student-organised societies in our school including Chinese Society, Astrophysics Society and Environmental Protection Society, to provide senior form students with leadership roles and enrich their OLE. Moreover, we fervently believe that students' horizons are broadened through approaching various parties of society when participating in voluntary services. In 2022-2023, the total voluntary service time was 11030 hours.
